A Day At The Races
by Preston Reed

This is one of the tunes most often requested by Preston's guitar students. This tune features a rapid, staccato cross-string run that makes extensive use of open strings, pull-offs, and hammer-ons; and an orchestral-style buildup that incorporates a moving bass line and "wall of sound" triplet picking.

"A Day at the Races" was originally released on the 1982 release Pointing Up (Flying Fish 422) and is now available on Preston Reed.

Accufuse
by Preston Reed

Often included in live shows and played at breakneck speed, "Accufuse" is chock full of hammer-ons and pull-offs.

"Accufuse" was first recorded on Playing By Ear (Flying Fish, 324) in 1984 and more recently re-recorded in 1997 for Ladies Night (Dusty Closet Records, DCD-96002) when Preston started playing his long-neck Adamas. It is also included in Preston's video Preston Reed in Concert (Homespun Videos, 1997). This transcription corresponds with the Ladies Night recording.

Along The Perimeter
by Preston Reed

Released on Handwritten Notes (Outer Bridge, OB1001), "Along the Perimeter" is a percussive tapping piece with great riffs and crowd-pleasing licks.

Blasting Cap
by Preston Reed

This hard driving tune is a common opener for Preston's shows. It was originally released in 1995 and is now available on the re-released and remastered Metal (2002 Outer Bridge, OB1002)

Crossing Open Water
by Preston Reed

"Crossing Open Water" integrates fingerpicking with some of Preston's most extreme two-handed percussive techniques within one composition. Released on Handwritten Notes (Outer Bridge, OB1001)

Digitalia
by Preston Reed

"Digitalia" is a fingerpicking delight Preston first recorded on the release Playing By Ear (Flying Fish, 324) and is now available on the recording Preston Reed (Flying Fish, 7011).

False Spring
by Preston Reed

This tune, reminding one of a classical etude, was first recorded on the release Don't Be A Stranger (FolkStudio) before being re-recorded on Playing By Ear (Flying Fish, 324). It is now available on Preston Reed (Flying Fish, 7011). Preston often plays this on classical guitar in his live performances. This is not the new version Preston has recorded on his release History of Now.

Far Horizon
by Preston Reed

"Far Horizon" is a simple yet elegant ballad. It was originally released in 1995 and is now available on the re-released and remastered Metal (2002 Outer Bridge, OB1002)

Fat Boy
by Preston Reed

"Fat Boy" is a "percussive solo acoustic funk tune" that illustrates several of the left- and right-hand techniques Preston uses frequently in his playing. It is a multi-voiced, "multi-instrumental" solo guitar tune in that it imitates the sounds and textures of other instruments: There's an ostinato drum and bass rhythm played by the right hand against a syncopated melody played over the top of the neck by the left hand, as well as a full-on "drum solo" in the middle of the tune.

"Fat Boy" was recorded on Metal (Outer Bridge, OB1002) in 1995.

Film Noir
by Preston Reed

Film Noir appeared on Border Towns. (Released 1993 Liberty 98708). Film noir (literally 'black film or cinema') was coined by French film critics who noticed the trend of how dark and black the looks and themes were of many American crime and detective films released in France following the war. The haunting tone and style of this piece is reminiscent of the dark tone of these old films.

Flatonia
by Preston Reed

This fingerpicking tune was first released on Instrument Landing (1989 by MCA/Universal Master Series 7800 Re-released 1990 by Liberty/Capitol Nashville Master Series 93957) before being re-recorded and released on Metal (Outer Bridge, OB1002). Video performance can be found on "Preston Reed in Concert" (Homespun Video HL00641396)

Gone But Not Forgotten
by Preston Reed

"Gone But Not Forgotten" is an enchanting piece Preston Reed first recorded on his Flying Fish label-debut Pointing Up (Flying Fish, 244) and is now available on the recording Preston Reed (Flying Fish, 7011). The piece, in dropped D tuning, is played in a similar vein as many of Preston's early compositions with Travis-style fingerpicking using an alternating bass line.

Halfway Home
by Preston Reed

A wistful and flowing composition, "Halfway Home" features a strong melody against an ostinato bass line. The lilt of the main theme draws the listener in immediately. This transcription is taken from the 1991 recording Halfway Home (1991 Liberty/Capitol Nashville Master Series 95885) This is not the new expanded version Preston has recorded on his release History of Now.

If Only
by Preston Reed

A sort of pop-flavored ballad with jazzy overtones. This was recorded on the 1987 release The Road Less Travelled (Flying Fish, 70423 now available at
Rounder.com). There are plenty of modulations to enjoy throughout the theme of this charming piece.

Ladies Night
by Preston Reed

A rather raunchy, acousto-pelvic, Southern rock-tinged funk romp paying tribute to late 70's bar music. This was recorded on the 1997 release Ladies Night (Dusty Closet, DCD-96002). Video performance of "Ladies Night" can be found on "
Muriel Anderson's All Star Guitar Night 2000" and "Preston Reed in Concert" (Homespun Video HL00641396)

Mermaid Eyes
by Preston Reed

This quick-paced composition ripples along like a mermaid coursing through the waters. "What color are a mermaid's eyes? Green, of course." This transcription is taken from the recording Ladies Night (
Outer Bridge, OB1003, original release 1995 Dusty Closet Records, DCD-96002).

Outskirts
by Preston Reed

Outskirts appeared on Border Towns. (Released 1993 Liberty 98708). It is a soft plaintive ballad requiring a gentle touch.

Overture (For Lily)
by Preston Reed

This song, played on 12-string guitar, was originally released in 1995 and is now available on the re-released and remastered Metal (2002 Outer Bridge, OB1002) It has been a concert favorite since first introduced.

Playing By Ear
by Preston Reed

The title song to Preston's second Flying Fish release, "Playing by Ear" is a delight to play. It features a major 7th feel with unique and jazzy twists and turns.

This was recorded on Playing By Ear (Flying Fish, 324) from which this transcription is taken. It is now available on the recording Preston Reed (Flying Fish, 7011).

To Try Again
by Preston Reed

This is an interesting piece from a chordal standpoint. It consists of three verses (with variations) and a bridge. "To Try Again" was recorded on the 1987 release The Road Less Travelled (Flying Fish, 70423). It is now available from Rounder Records at
Rounder.com.

by Preston Reed

Tribes
by Preston Reed

"As close to Earth beat, pan-cultural, politically correct music as I'm going to get." - Preston Reed, 1995.

"Tribes" was originally released on the album Metal (Re-released 2002 Outer Bridge, OB1002. Original release 1995 Dusty Closet Records, DCD-95001) and is played entirely with the left hand over the top of the neck and has extensive percussive techniques and strumming throughout. You will also find extensive use of hammered barres with the left hand first finger.

View From Afar
by Preston Reed

"View From Afar" was recorded on Pointing Up (Flying Fish 422) from which this transcription is taken from. It is now available on the recording Preston Reed (Flying Fish, 7011).
